Head
Injury Rehabilitation
Because the
neurophysiology of the visual system is housed in the brain, there
are nearly always visual consequences resulting from head trauma.
They can be mild, and respond to treatment with lenses and/or prisms
alone. Or they can be severely debilitating, and require months
of visual rehabilitation. This is possible because the brain is
eager to heal itself, and accelerates the production of new neurons,
(brain cells).
The rehabilitation
process is much like regular visual training, but with more emphasis
on rebuilding balance and orientation skills, which are usually
the primary result of trauma. Visual memory is also often impaired
by head injury. This too is remediable.
Visual rehabilitation which is possible at any age, is successful
no matter how long it has been since the accident. We recently rehabilitated
a woman who was 20 years post trauma.
